Step outside Oak Nook and within a minute you're in 175 acres of ancient common. The rest of Essex — gardens, racecourses, vineyards, pubs, and more — is just beyond.
Galleywood Common is a peaceful open space about 3 miles south of Chelmsford, enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It covers some 175 acres and is registered as Common Land, managed by Chelmsford City Council as a Local Nature Reserve.
Though tranquil today, the Common has a remarkable history — trampled by racehorses since the 17th century, one of the oldest racecourses in England once ran here. It was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Survey as ancient forest and has been common land ever since.
The Common comprises a mosaic of habitats — lowland heath, grassland, ponds, mire, wet heath and woodland — making it one of the most diverse green spaces in Essex. Step outside Oak Nook and you're there in sixty seconds.
From world-class gardens to a working vineyard just down the road, there's more on your doorstep than you might expect.
