The Common

Galleywood Common is a pleasant open space about 3 miles from Chelmsford enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Though it is tranquil today the Common has a surprising history. The land has been trampled by racehorses and farm animals, dug up to make bricks and taken over by the military.

Galleywood Common covers a large area of some 47 hectares. It was originally an ancient forest and was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Survey. It is now registered as Common Land and managed by Chelmsford City Council. It has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve.

The Common provides a unique mix of recreation, biodiversity and historical features which attract large numbers of visitors who enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding and more. If you’re looking for things to do in Chelmsford, add this green space to your list for a visit.

The Common comprises a mosaic of interrelated habitats: including lowland heath, grassland, ponds, mire and wet heath, in addition to sizeable woodland – making it a diverse green area to enjoy and explore.

Hylands House

Hylands Estate is a prestigious Grade II* listed public park encompassing 574 acres of historic parkland. The beautifully renovated Neo-Classical elegant villa Hylands House can be hired for any occasion including Weddings, Celebrations, and Business Events, and is open to the public on select days. The Stables house a café, second-hand bookshop, information point, and resident artist studios. Within the park, there are formal Victorian Gardens and ancient woodlands that are accessible as well as an award-winning accessible children’s Adventure Playground. With a list of seasonal events both within the House and the Park, Hylands Estate is the perfect place to visit and explore.

Galleywood Vineyard

Galleywood Estate vineyard started its creation in 2009. The vineyard now covers 20 acres of land and has several varieties of vines planted including Pinot Noir 5 clones, Pinot Meunier 2 clones, Chardonnay 8 clones and Bacchus 2 clones.
The Winery has been created in a water mill style building whose architectural proportions let us embrace this iconic Essex agriculture style of building with a new and exciting use - our wine production!

Lathcoates Farm

Welcome to Lathcoats Farm, Galleywood, Essex, a fourth generation family fruit farm growing over 40 varieties of delicious English apple, and a wide variety of summer fruits for PYO. All produce sold through our Farm Shop and show cased in The Bee Shed Coffee House. The Farm Shop showcases our own produce alongside plenty of great produce from locally sourced suppliers. From fresh fruit and veg, meats, staples and gifts we have you covered. The Bee Shed Coffee House is open for dining in with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available, open Monday to Saturday 9-4.

Horse & Groom Pub

Traditional pub, tucked away on Galleywood Common overlooking the old racecourse, ideal for walkers, with two bars with home cooked meals. One quiet bar and one with TV. Many photos of Old Chelmsford on walls, in particular of the old racecourse; also, a 1908 map of Essex. Various car and biker clubs meet at the pub, often with outside BBQs available.
